This book describes research undertaken by leading Australian researcher in Indigenous communities. While the chapters are Australian in their focus, the issues that are discussed are similar to those in other countries where there are indigenous people. In most cases, in Australia and internationally, Indigenous learners are not succeeding in school, thus making the transition into work and adulthood quite tenuous in terms of mainstream measures. The importance of being literate and numerate are critical in success in school and life in general, thus making this collection an important contribution to the international literature. The collection of works describes a wide range of projects where the focus has been on improving the literacy and numeracy outcomes for Indigenous students. The chapters take various approaches to improving these outcomes, and have very different foci. These foci include aspects of literacy, numeracy, curriculum leadership, ICTs, whole school planning, policy, linguistics and Indigenous perspectives. Most of the chapters report on large scale projects that have used some innovation in their focus. The book draws together these projects so that a more connected sense of the complexities and diversity of approaches can be gleaned.

Diet quality is a broad term that encapsulates both perceived and actual practices, personal preferences and cultural diversity. Measuring dietary quality can be problematic and includes investigating food types, the number or size of portions or their frequency. Diet quality may also be related to the type of food being ingested, snacking and other eating habits. Manufactured beverages and fast food may also be included as well as microbiological quality and attempts to improve single food items such as meats or vegetables. In this book, Diet Quality: An Evidence-Based Approach, Volume 1 all of the major facets of diet quality in relation to health outcomes are covered. This important new text includes methods for determining diet quality while adopting a holistic approach to impart information on the major areas of concern or knowledge. Chapters link in measurable indices of health such as obesity, pregnancy outcomes, cancer and cancer outcomes, and mortality. This book represents a diverse set of subject matters and seeks to fill a gap in the literature at a time when there is an increasing awareness that well being is associated with the qualitative nature of diets. Contributors are authors of international and national standing and emerging fields of science are incorporated. Diet Quality: An Evidence-Based Approach, Volume 1 is a useful new text designed for nutritionists, dietitians, clinicians, epidemiologist, policy makers and health care professionals of various disciplines.

Evidence-Based Neuroimaging is a user-friendly guide that employs evidence-based medicine criteria to systematically review the evidence defining the appropriate use of medical imaging for the brain, spine, head, and neck. Edited by L. Santiago Medina, Pina C. Sanelli, and Jeffrey G. Jarvik, the book provides a systematic framework for understanding the best imaging choices for patient care. Chapters highlight key points that support clinical applications, allowing fast access to pertinent information including patient selection, imaging strategies, test performance, cost-effectiveness, and applicability. The diagnostic imaging of many common diseases, disorders, and conditions are covered, including multiple sclerosis, acute ischemic stroke, dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, traumatic brain injury, autism, spinal trauma, spinal infections, neck masses, thyroid cancer, and cervical lymph node metastasis. By offering a clear understanding of the science behind the evidence, the book fills a void for radiologists, neurologists, neurosurgeons, pediatricians, primary care physicians, and other clinicians with an interest in neuroimaging and a desire to implement an evidence-based approach into their daily practice.

Positive psychology--the study and promotion of character strengths, positive emotion, and optimism--has gained considerable momentum and support in recent years. Yet despite its application to various specialty areas within the broader field of psychology, neuropsychology has been slow to adopt and adapt its ideas. The contributors to Positive Neuropsychology assert that neuropsychology as a discipline should concern itself with promoting cognitive health as well as addressing pathology. In these pages, positive neuropsychology is conceived of as broadening and enhancing the field, focusing on key areas such as studying and developing cognitive strengths, considering the importance of lifestyle factors on cognition, preventing cognitive dysfunction, compensating for deficits, and promoting cognitive health through education and technology. Chapters reveal not only the benefits of understanding cognitive health and optimal outcomes across the lifespan, but also emerging avenues for practitioners to expand their work into non-traditional settings. Among the topics featured: Modifiable lifestyle factors that impact cognition through midlife. Effects of coping strategies on outcomes in neurological disorders. Promoting cognitive health through effective sports concussion management. Use of innovative assessment and compensatory strategies to promote the executive functions. Promoting psychosocial and cognitive wellness in the workplace. Lifestyle factors and successful cognitive aging in older adults. Gerontechnology applications focused on promoting cognitive and general health. Bringing new dimensions to the neuroscience, wellness, and positive psychology literatures, Positive Neuropsychology will interest a wide range of academics and clinicians, including neuropsychologists, geriatricians, health psychologists, cognitive neuroscientists, and other mental health and public health professionals.

Research on Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) investigates how information and communication technologies can be designed in order to support pedagogical activities. The Evidence Based Design (EBD) of a system bases its decisions on empirical evidence and effectiveness. The evidence-based TEL workshop (ebTEL) brings together TEL and EBD. The first edition of ebTEL collected contributions in the area of TEL from computer science, artificial intelligence, evidence-based medicine, educational psychology and pedagogy. Like the previous edition, this second edition, ebTEL’13, wants to be a forum in which TEL researchers and practitioners alike can discuss innovative evidence-based ideas, projects, and lessons related to TEL. The workshop took place in Salamanca, Spain, on May 22nd-24th 2013. .
